This Is How We Heal
In Leslie Lissaints ground-breaking first solo show she combines spoken word poetry, contemporary movement and sound as a vehicle for storytelling. This Is How We Heal is an autobiographical telling of ones process to mend in light of the traumas of fatherlessness, drug addiction, mass incarceration, and the loneliness that silence births.
This vulnerable performance is timely and culturally relevant. The show demonstrates the power of the body to tell the truth in order to fully embody freedom.
Beyond the show, This Is How We Heal features a powerful education and outreach component, engaging youth and young adults of incarcerated parents as well as substance-abusing parents, in movement and writing workshops, in the physical work of sweat it out zumba clinics and in academic discussion regarding mental, physical, and spiritual impacts of incarceration and drug abuse on the family unit.
