On April 22 and 23, 2017 we are excited to join the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra in a presentation of Carl Orffs enduringly popular Carmina Burana. The opening section, Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi, is immediately recognizable, its intense, insistent choral line and ominously percussive symphonic support having become the go-to background music in countless television commercials and movie trailers since first being introduced to mainstream media in the movie Excalibur in 1981. The text, based on poems from the 11th to 13th centuries found in the Benedictine monastery of Benediktbeuern, Bavaria include the freshness of medieval love lyrics, exuberance of the drinking song, the zest of the sinners confessions, the wild humor of the hymns to gambling and gluttony, the stoic litany to Lady Luck (Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi) which Orff chose to open and close his score.[Classical Net]
Soloists are Soprano Janeanne Houston and Bass Paul Karaitis, both in demand for their interpretations of the challenging and dramatic solo roles in Carmina Burana.
In addition to the featured work, the program will include Beethoven's
Hallelujah from the Mt. of Olives, Haydn's Awake the Harp from the Creation, Mozart's Lacrimosa from the Requiem, and Brahms' How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place from the German Requiem.
