CIT is an effective training and response program designed for first responders, including EMS, who handle crisis calls involving people with mental illness, substance use disorders, and/or intellectual disabilities.

CIT training is designed to:
*Provide supportive measures and an on-the-job-tool that can be used by  public safety personnel, including Law Enforcement, EMS, Telecommunicators, and Probation to enhance and maintain personal, consumer, and public safety.

*Increase knowledge of major mental illnesses and develop an understanding

*Recognize symptoms of common psychiatric disorders

*Develop an understanding of an individual in crisis and techniques for active listening and de-escalation

*Be afforded the opportunity to practice and refine skills with guidance and feedback from mental health professionals

*Provide intervention strategies and alternatives to assist in directing individuals with mental illness and substance abuse issues to the appropriate health care system during crisis and reduce their involvement in the criminal justice system.

*Learn valuable community resources available for these populations.

Training is free for First Responders and this class is scheduled to accommodate Paramedic Professionals/EMS in both Forsyth and Stokes Counties. EMS staff from Forsyth and Stokes Counties are given first preference for attendance. Space is limited to 20 seats.

Only one registration per person is needed for the full
40-hour class. Training dates are two nights per week and one 8-hour day over a 4-week period. Attendees will be required to participate in all 40 hours of training in order to receive continuing education credits and CIT certification.
