Turkey -- Ancient, Old, Modern -- Prof. John McKinstry

Anatolia is home to some of the oldest remnants of civilization. Wave after wave of people thrived in the area over three millennia, sometimes merging, in other cases driving out and replacing.

For this presentation we will concentrate on Turkish society, the last people to infiltrate the region.

Modern Turkey was forged from the Ottoman Empire through warfare, intrusion from Western powers and accompanied by a profound shift from oriental tradition to modern social standards. We will touch on only a small part of these events, but what is shown in the program offers insight into the formation, continuation and circumstances of this fascinating society.

John McKinstry is Professor of sociology and Asian Studies at Cal Poly 1968-2014. Recipient of three teaching Fulbright awards. Staff of universities in Tokyo, Fukuoka, Harbin and Sofia, Bulgaria. Author and co-author of several books about Asian societies.
