A Day With Mussorgsky, Hummel & Dvorak -- Sandy Eastman
Sandy Eastman is offering you an opportunity to attend his pre-concert class and the symphony dress rehearsal for a San Luis Obispo Symphony concert on February 4.

The San Luis Obispo Symphony offers as a gift to the community free dress rehearsals of its concerts during the morning (11am-1pm) preceding the evening of the performance.

There is a cost now to attend the Symphony rehearsals. At the PAC, adults must pay $15 and seniors (age 65 and older) must pay $10. The rehearsal is free to children. The tickets for the dress rehearsal will available about a week before the performance at the PAC box office or by calling them at (805) 7564849.

The February 4 program:

Hummel: Trumpet Concerto in E flat with Phil Snedecor

Dvorak: Symphony No. 8 in G major

Classics Concert 3 - 8:00 p.m.Performing Arts Center, San Luis Obispo

Nan Washburn, Conductor

Phil Snedecor, Trumpet Virtuoso

The concert begins with Mussorgskys Night on Bald Mountain, a fast-paced, big brass piece inspired by Russian literary works and legend.

For the first time in at least two decades, the program will feature a trumpet solo. Phil Snedecor will perform Hummels Trumpet Concerto in E flat, a piece written for Viennese trumpet virtuoso and inventor of the keyed trumpet, Anton Weidinger, in 1803.

The Symphony will end the program playing DvoraksSymphony No. 8 in G major, a lush, cheery and lyrical piece that drew inspiration for the Bohemian folk music that Dvorak loved.

Nan Washburn is currently the Music Director of the Michigan Philharmonic and was also appointed the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for the Michigan Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, an ensemble that she founded in 2003. She has also served as the Artistic Director and Conductor of the West Hollywood Orchestra, Music Director of Orchestra Sonoma, the Camellia Symphony in Sacramento, Principal Conductor of the Channel Islands Symphony, the Acalanes Chamber Orchestra, the American Jazz Theater, and Director of the San Francisco State University Symphony Orchestra.

Phil Snedecor attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he received the prestigious Performers Certificate and was a member of the premiere brass quintet, the Canterbury Brass. Mr. Snedecor is a former member of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and has held one-year positions with the National Symphony, the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra and the Baltimore Opera. He is Principal Trumpet in the Harrisburg (PA) Symphony Orchestra and former Co-Principal Trumpet in the Concert Artists of Baltimore. Mr. Snedecor has performed and toured throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

This course will be in two parts.  In the early morning, there will be a lecture about the composers, about the pieces that will be played in the rehearsal, and about the soloist.  In the late morning, the class, as a group, will attend the dress rehearsal of the performance in the Christopher Coan Center at the PAC at Cal Poly.  At the dress rehearsal the SLO Symphony conductor will speak as he conducts, giving background information, musicology, and notes on harmony.  With the conductor's broad knowledge and stage presence, the dress rehearsals are fairly comprehensive.

Silsby Eastman (Sandy) grew up and spent his working life in the Los Angeles area before moving to Pismo Beach.  He has taught at Cuesta and Allan Hancock Colleges and has been playing bassoon, baritone saxophone, and bridge as often as possible.  After graduating from Occidental College and Indiana University, he studied conducting bassoon with Walter Ritchie and conducting with Lauris Jones and Richard Lert.  He served as a bandsman in the Air Force and taught in San Bernardino, La Canada, Paramount and Agoura Hills.  He is also a former member of the Long Beach Coterie Sinfonique, the Pasadena Community Orchestra and the Topanga Symphony.
