Make Your Own Historic Woman's Day Cap Workshop
White day caps were fashionable and practical accessories for both 18th and 19th century women. They could be plain or fancy, but were always useful for keeping hairstyles and hats in place.
In the first half of the workshop, participants will receive a special behind-the-scenes tour of the Landis Collections Gallery and informative session about the history of womans caps, the fabrics that made them, and the care of historic headwear. Students will be able to closely examine rarely seen historic caps from the Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum collection.
A short introduction will allow participants to examine original caps of the period. Each will choose a desired cap style. Cap fabric will be either linen or cotton and available in several different weaves. Various construction techniques will ensure that each cap will be unique. Caps will be hand stitched and all needed stitches will be taught. Hand sewing experience is helpful, but not required.
