Five new compositions for chamber jazz ensemble (plus spoken word, found sounds, and dancer) inspired by the Brazilian poets Ana Cristina Cesar, Angélica Freitas, and Augusto de Campos. The inspiration for this project stems from the composer's recent experience in Brazil, where he spent six months studying rhythmic process and improvisational interaction in music. The compositions premiered here draw proliferating lines that spin out from themes emerging in poetry and found soundslife cycles, birth and rebirth, change and becoming, fusion and elision, flow and process, eternal recurrence. Identity spins out in multiple directions, concrete lines melt into fluid circles
The Universal Language Project is dedicated to creating artisan music through innovative and entertaining programming that can simultaneously push boundaries and dialogue with a mainstream public. Through multi-discipline collaboration and engaging musicians and composers from diverse backgrounds and eclectic genres, the Universal Language Project aspires to generate a body of music that can reach across generational divides, through geographic borders, and beyond spoken language and cultural difference.
Chris Stover is a composer and trombonist in New York City: in addition to leading his own ensembles (Helical Quartet, the Caetano Veloso Project, More Zero, Circle by Night, and the 12-piece big band Book of Sand), he has appeared recently with Django Bates, Darcy James Argue, Fred Ho, Charlie Hunter, Slavic Soul Party!, Samir Chatterjee, Eddie Palmieri, Wayne Horvitz, Jovino Santos Neto, and many others. Chris has release seven CDs as a leader or co-leader, with two new CDs (Helical Quartet and the Caetano Veloso Project) scheduled to be released in 2016. His compositions explore process, growth, flux, and recontextualization, with careful and nuanced considerations of the relationships between melody and harmony and the ways these relationships can change over time. He is an Assistant Professor at the New School College of Performing Arts, where he teaches music theory, composition, history, and music philosophy courses. He spent most of the 201516 academic year in Brazil on a Fulbright teaching and research fellowship.
