"no such place" boasts six new dances from choreographers nation-wide, as well as one returning piece from the groups past repertory. Selected from the dozens of works submitted to Bellingham Repertory Dance at the start of the season, this winter's repertory exposes an unusually rich and palpably weighted slice of contemporary dance and culture. Each of the seven pieces seen in "no such place" offer strange glimpses into complete worlds of particular social structures, gravity, texture, evolution, and narrative.

Though the realities built by the dancers within each world are clear and consistent, the audience will feel as though they are peeking through a narrow doorway into a room which stretches unknowingly beyond view. Like post-modern cubism, BRD alum Ella Mahler's duet "this and this too" suggests a relationship that either expresses itself across a span of time, or exists as many multiplicities at once. Somebodies Dance Theater's "Quietly, Quickly" explores the heightened social and physical awareness bred by war in a duet set against an anxious backdrop of a chorus of dancers, and Joy French's "1st/2nd" invites audiences into the nuance and absurdity of laughter between close friends. Threaded through the concerts offerings is the genuine and daring use of movement as a language for building not only narrative but also emotional texture.
