About Brian Oberlin

Brian Oberlin is an internationally acclaimed mandolin player and educator. During his 12-year professional career, Brian has been playing swing, bluegrass, and Italian classical as a solo mandolinist and vocalist. Along with the myriad of award-winning bands and ensembles he has collaborated with throughout the United States and Europe, Brian is also the founder and director of the River of the West Mandolin Camp and the Oregon Mandolin Orchestra. When he is not performing, Brian teaches music to children and adults at art centers, cultural events, festivals, camps, music schools and academies. Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Brian now lives in Portland, Oregon.

About Carl Thor

Adept with piano, hammered dulcimer, vocals, percussion and, increasingly, mandolin, Carl is a founding member of the Vancouver Celtic and folk group Talisman and Portland contra dance bands Hands4 and Cascade Crossing. He is also a 13 year veteran of the Portland Megaband, and plays in other groupings for folk dancing, as a soloist, and in duo collaborations with other musicians including Carolyn Cruso, Jennifer Pratt-Walter, and Lori Prime. He has provided hammered dulcimer accompaniment for the Aurora Chorus, the Portland Lesbian Choir, the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, the Oregon Repertory Singers Youth Chamber Choir, and the Southminster Presbyterian Church choir in performances of music by Malcolm Dalglish.

In the past 15 years, Carl has been drawn back to his original instrument, the piano, playing frequently for dances and jam sessions. He adds his driving yet lyrical keyboard rhythm to Hands4 and Cascade Crossing, and has played keys with Orcas Ruckus, LCL Express, the lab band at Portland Community College (PCC) and with The Suspects, a PCC faculty-student jazz combo. Carl serves as an accompanist, and contra dance band leader, for the Unitarian Universalist Church of Vancouver and for the July Eliot Institute camp at Seabeck, WA.

Carl writes memorable tunes and songs and his music has been performed by Talisman, Hands4, Cascade Crossing, Joyride, Mystic Spatula, the Portland Megaband, the Hat Band and others. His tune, The Sidereal Shuffle, appears in Volume 2 of the Portland Collection, and two more tunes, Ni Felis Gratis and Terrebonne Depot will appear in the forthcoming Volume 3. In addition, Carl has published a book of his music entitled Come to the Dance Hall: A Collection of Melodies for Diverse Musical Instruments, Suitable for Use in Country Dancing and Related Pastimes, now in its 2nd edition, and publishes sheet music of his original pieces and arrangements for hammered dulcimer.

About Jane Keefer
Carl Thor

Like many modern traditional players, I started out doing something other than music, namely theoretical chemistry and physics (phD 1969, Univ of Illinois). This led to Southern California in the mid-70's where I encountered a small but intensely dedicated group of string band music enthusiasts. I was entranced and within the space of several years acquired a banjo, fiddle and dulcimer to go along with the guitar I had owned since my teens. When the budget was trimmed in 1977 and I got laid off, I never looked back.

I am pretty much self-taught, and that means my technique is not always "correct" in a classical sense. Still, having a penchant for analysis, I soon discovered that if you read music, either tablature or notes, you can also write it. This led to teaching for a local music store and ultimately some 1200 arrangements and several years later to a modest mail-order business and numerous published tablatures.

I especially enjoyed group classes where I could combine some individual tutoring with group teaching as a "performance" art. I am perhaps most proud of my "folk ensemble" class that introduced beginning and intermediate players to the joys of Old-Time String Band playing. I've taught since 1977 in a myriad of settings for individual and groups for instrumental arrangements in tablature for flatpick and fingerpicking guitar, clawhammer and 3-finger banjo, strum and fingerpicking mountain dulcimer, mandolin and fiddle. Fiddle arrangements are also available in standard notation for use on any instrument. I've published scores of tablature arrangements in Banjo Newsletter (BNL) and Pickin' Magazine and recorded with Truman Price "Songs & Tunes of the Oregon Trail".

As a solo performer, I focus on traditional songs and tunes from the Appalachian mountains, sung and played on the 5-String Banjo, Mountain Dulcimer, Fiddle and Guitar. Material includes lively dance tunes, novelty songs from the 20's and 30's, ballads and songs from a variety of sources with a special emphasis on Carter Family songs. Newer songs and an occasional original, all crafted in the traditional mold, are mixed in for good measure.

About Paul Chasman

After the release of Paul Chasmans second album in 1981, Guitar Player Magazine called Pauls music, Imaginative, sensitive; a fine example of a guitarists devotion to the full exploration of his instruments capabilities. Thirty years later, after releasing his One Man Guitar Festival CD, Minor 7 Web Magazine continued the accolades with this description: Eclectic and inspiring (with a) keen ability and attention to craft...seamlessness and continuity that dont seem possible. Chasman is a fretboard master.

After the release of Guitar Festival which celebrated fifty years of guitar playing, Paul had surgery on his left hand (due to fifty years of guitar playing). During his recovery while he was barely able to hold a G chord, he wrote a song Then he wrote another and another--he couldnt stop! Three years and two CDs later, Paul Chasman has completed his reincarnation from mute guitarist to acclaimed singer/songwriter. His songs are a skillful mix of vivid poetry, formidable guitar playing, and biting satire.

Paul Chasmans musical career spans over fifty years during which time he has recorded over fifteen albums of his own music; performed solo, with blues, bluegrass, rock, and jazz bands, and in classical ensembles; composed the musical score for the feature film, The Last of Us; was contributing writer for Frets and Guitar Player Magazine; was musical director for the Port Angeles production of the play, Celebration; taught at the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop for fifteen years; was a founding member of The Acoustic Guitar Summit along with Terry Robb, Doug Smith, and Mark Hanson with whom he played for its first nine years.
