SITI Thought Center Presents: CAGE CONVERSATIONS
SITI Company is diving into "Theater Piece #1", a new work examining the pervasive influence of the composer/maverick/musician/writer/visual artist/theorist/chess player/anarchist/raconteur/teacher/performer/poet/innovator/mycologist John Cage. The very first stage of this project is entitled "Chess Match" and will receive its world premiere at the Abingdon Theatre in New York from March 9 to April 2. As part of our research into Cage, SITI is conducting a series of public conversations with individuals whose trajectories have been indelibly marked by the example, the work, and the life of John Cage.

Wendell Beavers, a dancer and educator, was a founding faculty member and Director (1984-1990) of the Experimental Theatre Wing at NYU. He taught there from 1979-2003, and was involved in developing a Viewpoints training and pedagogy in collaboration with originator Mary Overlie. Wendell was also a cofounder and early director of Movement Research, Inc. In 2004, Wendell founded the MFA Theatre: Contemporary Performance Program at Naropa University. John Cage, a student of Zen Buddhism, was a faculty member during the Naropa Institutes first summer sessions in 1974. While there, Cage, along with Allen Ginsberg, Anne Waldman and Diane di Prima founded the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics. Like Cage, Wendell has been practicing Buddhism since 1985 and works at the intersection of Buddhism and the arts. Anne Bogart will interview Wendell Beavers for SITIs third Cage Conversation.
