True West
The Gestalt Theatre Project follows on the heels of such artistic successes as the West Coast Premieres of "When We Were Young and Unafraid" and "The Library" with an iconic piece of contemporary theatre. This time, Gestalt is partnering with The New Threads Theatre Company, known for its recent productions of "Gods of Carnage" and "Oleanna." Sam Shepard's "True West" is a story of two brothers. Austin is a screenwriter desperate for a break that is just around the corner. Staying at his mother's Los Angeles house while she is on an Alaskan cruise, Austin's work is interrupted by the surprise appearance of a brother he has not seen in years. Lee is a drifter whose very presence sets Austin on edge. Having premiered at San Francisco's Magic Theatre in 1980, the play has lost none of its ability to make us laugh, even as our hearts race in anticipation of a violence that is both inevitable and shocking.
