Nov 4th Free Webinar on Human Illness and Stormwater Bacteria

We would like to invite you to a lunchtime webinar, "Human Illness and Stormwater Bacteria - is there a link?" Ken Schiff, Deputy Director of the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP), will discuss his stormwater research with a particular emphasis on the results of their three year epidemiological study on health impacts of entering coastal water during and after rainfall. This is a critical issue for Washington also as it relates to our streams, lakes and shorelines where we swim and boat and also have important shellfish areas.

The study tracked the illness rates of 654 San Diego-area surfers during the rainy winter season and found that surfers experienced increased rates of both gastrointestinal illness and other illness symptoms when they surfed during rain events and/or in the three days that followed. Ken is responsible for helping manage day-to-day operations, supervision of senior level staff, and developing the long-term vision of the research agency. His duties include management of large projects that cut across several scientific disciplines and agency departments, such as southern California Regional Monitoring and both human health and environmental health risk assessments. He received his undergraduate degree from San Diego State University in 1984 and his Master of Science Degree from California State University Long Beach in 1988.
