MINNEAPOLIS - Following two years of successful events thanks to a partnership with VSA Minnesota, the state organization for arts and disability, the third iteration of this annual cabaret for performance artists with disabilities will be guest curated by storyteller Alison Bergblom Johnson. The 2014 iteration invited artists to present work on the topic of love, relationships, and sex as a person with a disability, and in 2015 the theme was work, reflecting on employment, labor, and the work of everyday life. In 2016, artists focus on the theme of rights and responsibilities.

People with disabilities have rights laid out in such legislation as the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. These phrases may, as unlikely as it may seem, come tripping off our tongues as people with disabilities. But in addition to rights, we also have responsibilities. Join us for an exploration of those rights and responsibilities.

ARTIST BIOS

Alison Bergblom Johnson writes creative nonfiction and tells stories. She focuses on neglected personal stories about the past that intersect with the present. The stories she tells arent supposed to be talked about - they are often considered too personal. Her work connects to larger political movements: particularly womens and disability rights.

Actor/writer/storyteller Amy Salloway (Friday only) is the creator of the award-winning autobiographical touring solo plays Does This Monologue Make Me Look Fat?,  So Kiss Me Already, Herschel Gertz!, and Circumference, as well as the two-person show Entwined.  Shes contributed stories to MPR's In the Loop, CBC radio's Definitely Not The Opera, and the national podcast Risk!, and she performs regularly on just about every spoken-word-inclusive stage in the Twin Cities. Find out more at www.amysalloway.com.

Michael Merriam (Saturday only) is a blind storyteller and author who has appeared on stage in the Minnesota Fringe Festival, StoryFest Minnesota, Story SlamMN! and over the air on KFAI and Minnesota Public Radio and has published 8 books and over 80 short stories. Visit his website at michaelmerriam.com

Lucas Scheelk is a white, autistic, trans, queer-identified poet from the Twin Cities. They were one of the recipients of the VSA Emerging Artist grant for 2016.

Rae Skahl is a queer poet whose pieces address themes such as health, history, science, social justice, mythology, and farming. Originally from the Iron Range, she now lives and works in the Twin Cities.

Bruce Ario began writing when his recovery began after taking an incomplete degree in law school and a period of homelessness. He began as a poet, moved into playwriting, and settled in as a novelist.

Peder Hagen (Iris Oconnell) always felt born into a different time and relates to Iris OConnell, farm wife from western Pennsylvania. Iris likes Judy Garland because they both didn't feel like they fit in when they were young and now they do.

Nikki Abramson is an actor, teacher, speaker, mentor, and author. She enjoys performing and writing pieces about life story that help inspire others in their journey.
