Seattle Peace Chorus 2016/17 Season Pass

This year we begin a series of concerts to honor groups of people who have kept their very rich traditions alive throughout persecution, enslavement and hardships. Our Diaspora series begins in this 2016-2017 season and will continue into the 2017-2018 season.

Orin Odara: Songs of Transformation - Nov 18 & 19, 2016
In anticipation of the our December trip to Cuba, our November concert, Orin Odara - Songs of Transformation, features music of the African Diaspora. The song suite Orin Odara, was arranged
and composed by Fred Hoadley. It uses rhythms and texts from the Santeria tradition of the Yoruba people who were brought to Cuba as slaves and whose musical heritage endured despite the oppression of slavery. The chorus will be joined by soloist Elsbeth Savani and the Afro-Cuban-Jazz group Sonando. The first half of this concert will feature American gospel and traditional songs that we will sing in Cuba.

Verdi For the People - Jun 3 & 4, 2017
Our June concert, Verdi for the People, is a tribute to the
Jewish Diaspora. It honors the strength of the human spirit and the power of music to keep that spirit alive during the darkest times.

Giuseppe Verdis Messa da Requiem, composed in 1874, was originally written to honor the Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni. During WWII, conductor Raphael Schächter, a prisoner at
Theresienstadt Nazi concentration camp, taught this piece to 150 fellow prisoners with only a single smuggled score and a piano in a damp basement. The prisoners memorized the piece and performed it as an act of cultural rebellion, also demonstrating the resilience of the human spirit. We will remember that event with our performance of the requiem along with beautiful traditional Jewish songs.
