Wayne Krantz Trio
If there were a book chronicling all the distinct and diverse sounds that guitarist Wayne Krantz can pull out of his instrument, it would be an epic. All About Jazz describes his approach as grungy, hard-driving riffs and string-caressing melodism but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Employing a full array of effects and pedals, his tone can change at the flick of a switch. Akin to rock guitar heroes nearly as much as it is akin to those of jazz, his latest album Good Piranha/Bad Piranha was born of cover songs that Krantz and his group performed live at NYCs 55 Bar (the guitarists home base venue). The covers are mainly in title only, as Krantz morphs each tune with his singular guitar work. The Undercover Pop Tour, as his fall tour has been dubbed, showcases the band performing the music of Bob Dylan, Talking Heads, Prince, Sonic Youth and more.
