The World Waking Up To An Irresistibly Indefinable Sound Rupa & the April Fishes' 'BUILD' out Oct 2

Whether singing in French, Spanish, English, Romany, Tzotzil or Hindi, Rupa of Rupa & the April Fishes has a voice that sounds "like sips of hot coffee with bits of spiced cake" (NPR), fronting "one of the hottest emerging acts" (Time Out Chicago) on the San Francisco scene.

The five-piece outfit, which takes its name from the French version of April Fool's Day, defines the sound of a global awakening, balancing performances in diverse settings ranging from the slums of India, a divided Athens, and halfway houses for deported Mexican migrants to a 50K person crowd at the Power to the Peaceful festival in San Francisco. Blending the electronic touches of Regina Spektor, the rogue attitude of Manu Chao, and the ethereal clanks of Tom Waits, the band reexamines the power of language and movements for social change with an irresistibly indefinable sound that comes to full fruition on 'BUILD' out October 2 (Electric Gumbo Radio Music).

Sparse percussion and a hypnotic double bass form the foundation of opener "build," which has been picked up to promote upcoming documentary Generation Food Project, led by Hoop Dreams director Steve James and author Raj Patel. Working with producer Todd Sickafoose (Ani DiFranco, Andrew Bird), the band also shows off the breadth of their diverse chops on the atmospheric ska of "sur la route" and an infectious cover of The Clash's politically-minded "guns of brixton."

Inspired by the street music and public art of San Francisco, Rupa & the April Fishes' music reflects the ethos of worldwide pro-democracy movements in their celebration of the "pluralistic and paradoxical" (San Francisco Gate). The band's musical dialogue has attracted fans and fellow activists including authors Rebecca Solnit (who wrote the album's foreword), Raj Patel, and David Graber. Rupa & the April Fishes will be announcing a 2012-2013 worldwide tour in support of the album's release shortly.
