21st C. World Powers: Relations Between U.S., Russia, and China Today & Tomorrow

In this interactive, seminar-style course, we will examine the motivations, national interests, and strategies of these three great powers, and we will discuss the areas in which they overlap and those in which they tend to clash.  We will discuss the current leadership and forms of government in all three nations and the degree to which leadership style and internal politics play out in world affairs.

Participants should have a strong interest in current world affairs and should prepare for the class by conducting an internet search on such topics as China (or Russia)  in world affairs, geopolitics among today's world powers, and/or China's (or Russia's) strategic goals.  Participants could also conduct an online search of the periodicals World Affairs and/or Foreign Affairs for articles on each country's priorities and on relations among Russia, China, and the U.S.

Participants who are really interested in this topic are invited to purchase and read a recently published book: Martin A. Smith's Power in the Changing Global Order:  The U.S., Russia and China.

Participants will be expected to contribute to the discussion from their own study of contemporary international affairs.  It is expected that the participants themselves will provide the greatest source of facts and opinions in the discussions (based on their reading), with the instructor acting as the discussion facilitatior.

This course will be held on three Tuesday morinings, October 9, 16, and 23 at 10:00am to 12:00 noon.  Location is the PG&E Community Room in SLO
