"A House of One's Own: Elizabeth Bishop in Key West"

Malcolm Willison, old poet, new playwright, uses Elizabeth Bishop's letters and poems for a monologue by young Bishop (U.S. poet laureate, 1949/50). This short play chronicles, during eight years in World-War-II-era Key West, Bishop's increasing difficulties with her house, her lovers and friends, and poetry itself. In six scenes Bishop talks to unseen others about her purchasing, occupying, renting out, and finally selling her much-loved house, while losing one partner and then another, sinking into depression, alcoholism, and writer's block, yet managing finally to demonstrate her perseverance in her poetic career toward the acclamation she achieved.

This performance will include two performances: "A House of One's Own: Elizabeth Bishop in Key West" and "Online Dates are Hard to Handle."
