Infinite Variety Productions presents: "Eclipsed" by Patricia Burke Brogan
Eclipsed was one of the first plays to tell the story of the Magdalene Laundries and was inspired by Patricia's experiences as a young novitiate. After seeing the horrendous goings on in the laundries, Patricia decided that becoming a nun was not for her. Instead she decided to highlight the plight of these women in her writing. Eclipsed takes us right into the Magdalene laundry to which Ms. Brogan was assigned and brings four of the penitents in her charge to vivid life as they were then -- young passionately alive women forgotten by the outside world, eclipsed from the light of life and human connection. Discarded and forgotten by society these "fallen women" are stripped of their human rights, forced into slave labor and religious conformity. With no hope of being rescued, the women, physically and emotionally abused, fight to keep hope alive amidst songs, stories and playful ideas of marrying Elvis. Over 30,000 girls passed through these institutions, the last one closed in 1996. Do you know this story? Well, it's about time you did.

IVP's production of Eclipsed is supported by Justice for the Magdalenes - an advocacy group fighting for restorative justice and reparations for survivors of Ireland's Magdalene Laundries. www.magdalenelaundries.com

Other supporters of IVP's production include the
Adoption Rights Alliance- www.adoptionrightsalliance.com & SNAP- www.snapnetwork.org/

The run will include a talkback with:
Mari Steed, the daughter of a Magdalene survivor, adopted to the U.S. from Ireland in 1960 and mother to a daughter relinquished to adoption in the U.S. in 1978. She is reunited with her mother, daughter and extended family. Mari served on the board of AdoptionIreland, an adoption rights group in Ireland from 2001-2007; as PA State Director of Bastard Nation since 1998; and currently with Adoption Rights Alliance, the successor organisation to AdoptionIreland. In 2003, she co-founded Justice for Magdalenes, an advocacy group fighting for restorative justice and reparations for survivors of Ireland's Magdalene Laundries.

About Infinite Variety Productions
IVP is an all-female not-for-profit theatre company, whose mission is to produce historical plays about women, stories that are not taught in history classes and therefore go untold. IVP believes that these stories are essential; without learning from the past, we cannot hope to improve the future. We aim to create opportunities for female artists to voice the words of these unknown storytellers. To broaden the public view one audience at a time.

Starting with two actors wishing to change downtown theatre by tackling plays that incite discussion and emotion in the audience, IVP's journey started with Ashley Adelman and Maria Makenna last spring with a production of Jean Paul Sartre's "No Exit", which opened at Theatre For The New City to sold-out audiences. They later combined forces with now Resident Director Bridget Leak, a fellow MFA classmate, and after a year of work, pulled together the perfect team for the production of "A Piece Of My Heart" by Shirley Lauro. IVP's production of A Piece of My Heart not only saw sold out performances at The Midtown Theatre, The Tank, but continued to sell out shows after it the Judith Malina's famous downtown Living Theatre picked the show up for a second run. "A Piece of My Heart" was supported by The Vietnam Womens Memorial Foundation. Determined to continue in their mission IVP found Eclipsed. Petol Weekes, NYC producer, eagerly then joined the team. Based on true events of the Magdalene Laundries and supported by the group Justice for Magdalenes, the IVP team was ready to launch their next project.
