SMO Chapel Series - 2016-17 Season Pass
SEATTLE MODERN ORCHESTRA

SMO Chapel Series - 2016-17 Season Pass

With this pass you get access to all 3 SMO Concerts held at the Chapel in the Good Shepherd Center on November 3, 2016, March 11  and June 3, 2017. (No other SMO performances are valid with this pass)

CONCERT I - REFLECTIONS ON SOUND AND SILENCE

Seattle Modern Orchestra opens its 2016-17 season with a concert featuring works by three composers who reflect on the past, both personal and cultural, to create an expressive music for today. Both celebrated German composer Wolfgang Rihm and Lithuanian composer Vykintas Baltakas  winner of the 2003 Claudio Abbado International Composition Prize and the 2007 Ernst von Siemens Grants-in-aid Prize  recontextualize ideas from other works in their respective catalogs, with a language of gesture linking us to past traditions. Also on the program is the world premiere of American composer Andrew Waggoners Concerto for Piano, written for Grammy-winning pianist Gloria Cheng, conductor Julia Tai and the Seattle Modern Orchestra.

PROGRAM:
Vykintas Baltakas - Redditio for ensemble (2010) - U.S. Premiere
Wolfgang Rihm - Chiffre II (Silence to be beaten) for 14 players (1983) - West Coast Premiere
Andrew Waggoner - Concerto for Piano (2016) - World Premiere - with guest pianist Gloria Cheng

CONCERT II - DOUBLE PORTRAIT - ERICKSON / DEMPSTER

Seattle Modern Orchestra celebrates the centennial of American composer Robert Erickson and the 80th birthday of legendary Seattle trombonist and composer Stuart Dempster. Erickson (1917-1997) crystallizes the American pioneering spirit in music. He was one of the first American composers to explore Schoenbergs twelve-tone system, experimented with custom-made percussion instruments and instrumental extended techniques, and worked extensively with sounds recorded on tape with or without live performers. The three works on this program give a glimpse into this underrated American artist. Erickson will be paired with another pioneer, Stuart Dempster. Dempster  whose motto is put play back in playing music  and SMO collaborate on precomposed and improvised works, including a world premiere written for SMO, titled S. M. O. R. E. S.

PROGRAM:
Robert Erickson - The Idea of Order at Key West for soprano, flute, clarinet, trumpet, viola and cello (1979)
Robert Erickson - General Speech for solo trombone (1969)
Robert Erickson - Pacific Sirens for percussion and variable instruments / voices (1969)
Stuart Dempster - Milanda Embracing for various instrumentation (1993-94)
Stuart Dempster - S. M.O.R.E.S. for ensemble and voices (2017) - World Premiere

CONCERT III: MYSTIC CLARINET - WITH GUEST ARTIST CAROL ROBINSON

For its season finale concert, Seattle Modern Orchestra collaborates with Paris-based clarinetist Carol Robinson in a program centered around Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi. Robinson worked closely with this enigmatic composer on his works. She will premiere a new work by SMO co-artistic director Jérémy Jolley, and celebrate the 90th birthday of renowned Seattle clarinetist/composer William O. Bill Smith.

PROGRAM:
William O. Bill Smith - Rites for solo clarinet and tape (1959)
Giacinto Scelsi - Ko-Lho for flute and clarinet (1966)
Giacinto Scelsi - Kya for clarinet and 7 instruments (1959) - Seattle Premiere
Jeremy Jolley - Archipel en résonnant à Venise  for solo clarinet, 5 instrumental groups and fixed media (2017) - World Premiere
