Join the Everett Philharmonic Orchestra for its Seventh Season Opener on October 8, 2016, from 7-9 PM at the Everett Civic Auditorium.

It opens with Aaron Copland's Tender Land Suite, an orchestral piece written from the opera by the same name.  It's a love story set in a small Midwestern town...Migrant worker boy meets local girl, they fall in love at her high school graduation dance and decide to elope, boy gets cold feet and both leave town to begin their individual lives.   The first movement  is comprised of the introduction to Act II and the music of the love duet. The second movement is the lively square dance from Act II, and the last movement is the music of The Promise of Living, the vocal quintet from the end of Act I. According to Copland, reviews of the suite were much more enthusiastic than for the opera itself.

Pianist John Pickett returns to our stage to play the beloved Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin.  Composed in 1924 Rhapsody would, of course, come to be regarded as one of the most important American musical works of the 20th century. It would also open the door for a whole generation of serious composersfrom Copland to Brechtto draw on jazz elements in their own important works. We are delighted to reminisce our 2006 performance with Mr. Picket in Carnegie Hall.

Ludvig von Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A Major brings dance elements, vitality, and sense of celebration.  Richard Wagner's review states in part "...The Symphony is the Apotheosis of the Dance itself: it is Dance in its highest aspect, the loftiest deed of bodily motion, incorporated into an ideal mold of tone."  After its premiere in 1813, the Seventh Symphony was repeated three times in the following 10 weeks; at one of the performances the "applause rose to the point of ecstasy," according to a newspaper account.  Beethoven himself called it "one of the happiest products of my poor talents."

Dr. Paul-Elliott Cobbs will share his insights and historical details at the pre-concert stage side chat at 6:00 pm. Our wonderful soloist may even make an appearance for some of his own comments.
(You will also be able to get your first choice of seating for the concert!)

Box Office will open at 5:45 to facilitate purchasing tickets at the door.
