The word iboga (or eboghe) is derived from the Tsogo verb boghaga, which means "to care for".
Tabernanthe iboga or simply iboga is a perennial rainforest shrub and psychedelic, native to western Central Africa.
Iboga stimulates the central nervous system when taken in small doses and induces visions in larger doses.
In parts of Africa where the plant grows, the bark of the root is chewed for various pharmacological or ritualistic purposes.
In Gabon the Babongo and other ancestor cults like the Bwiti still flourish in the twenty-first century. Their members share a common belief, based on direct experience, in the existence of a supernatural realm where the spirits of the ancestors may be contacted.
Bwiti practitioners use the root bark specially cultivated for the religion, to promote radical spiritual growth, to stabilise community and family structure and to resolve pathological problems.
The root bark has been consumed for hundreds of years in a Bwiti rite of passage ceremony, as well as in initiation rites and acts of healing.
Ibogaine, the active alkaloid, is also used to treat substance abuse disorders and depression.
Iboga extracts, as well as the purified alkaloid ibogaine, have attracted attention because of their purported ability to reverse addiction to recreational drugs such as alcohol and opiates. Anecdotal reports assert that administration of ibogaine reduces craving for opiates and cocaine for extended periods of time.

Sara Glatt is fascinated by the relationship between plants and human conditions.
Over the last 17 years she has been working as an independent researcher in the field of mind altering plants and mushrooms.
She has mainly worked with Iboga helping drug users, mentally unstable people and spiritual seekers improve their lives.
Come and join us for an afternoon with Sara Glatt, she will share her journey, experiences and understanding of the workings of Iboga.
