John McCutcheon
Lighting up the Oaksong Music Societys stages in 2010, 2012 and 2014, John McCutcheon has become the most-requested musician in the Oaksong Music Societys lineup. John was set to return last January, when a medical condition forced the show to be cancelled. However, he is now set to return for our first show of 2017!
Its not difficult to understand why John McCutcheon is so popular. Performing since the 1970s, McCutcheon is regarded as one of the countrys most respected and loved folksingers. Described by The Washington Post as Folk Music's Rustic Renaissance Man", McCutcheons storytelling style has been compared to that of Will Rogers and Garrison Keillor. As an instrumentalist, he is a master of a dozen different traditional instruments, most notably the rare and beautiful hammer dulcimer. Johnny Cash once called him, the most impressive instrumentalist I've ever heard." In concert, he plays a wide variety of instruments, including 6 and 12-string guitars, banjo, fiddle, piano, accordion, autoharp, concertina, and of course, the hammer dulcimer. McCutcheons songwriting has been hailed by critics and singers around the globe. His thirty-five recordings have garnered every imaginable honor including seven Grammy nominations. He has produced over twenty albums of other artists, from traditional fiddlers to contemporary singer-songwriters to educational and documentary works. His books and instructional materials have introduced budding players to the joys of their own musicality. And his commitment to grassroots political organizations has put him on the front lines of many of the issues important to communities and workers.
John's latest album, Trolling For Dreams (due to be released in mid-September 2016), is a tour-de-force of his writing. With 13 new songs, he sings of love, loss, aging, the passing of his father, a tribute to storyteller Kathryn Tucker Windham, songwriting, and more. These are some of the most amazing songs of his career and he's brought together the band he most loves playing with to give them life.
In 2015, McCutcheon released Joe Hills Last Will, his 37th album. Joe Hill was a songwriter for the Industrial Workers of the World, the Wobblies, back in the early 20th century. Prior to his execution in 1915, Hill was the ultimate utilitarian songwriter, composing pieces to be used at meetings and picket lines and rallies. His ability to take contemporary songs and re-write them to reflect the issues of his day served as a template to later writers like Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger, and, truly, the music of the Civil Rights Movement. In Joe Hill's Last Will, McCutcheon has gathered thirteen of Hill's songs and breathed new life into them. In the hands of Mr. McCutcheon, Hills songs weep with the passion of laborers who battled to form unions after immigrating to the United States. This latest album clearly shows why McCutcheon is a folk hero in his own right.
