Albuquerque Chamber Soloists: Beethoven-Early and Late
On Sunday, October 9, at 3:00PM, Albuquerque Chamber Soloists will fill the sanctuary of St. Paul Lutheran Church with the works of one of music's most influential composers, Ludwig van Beethoven. We will present an early and a late work to give our audience a real sense of how he developed as an artist. Our concert opens with the Op. 20 Septet for winds and strings, completed when Beethoven was nearly thirty years of age, and just a few years prior to the epic works that would place him at the forefront of Western art. The influences of his teacher, Haydn, and of Mozart are clear throughout this 6-movement work. Local favorites violinist David Felberg, violist Kimberly Fredenburgh, cellist James Holland, and bassist Jean-Luc Matton will play the string parts. The wind players will be NM Philharmonic and Santa Fe Symphony regulars Emily Erb, clarinet; Alexander Onieal, bassoon, and Nathan Ukens, French horn. After intermission, we enter the world of Beethoven's late music with the String Quartet in c-sharp minor, Op. 131, which Beethoven himself considered his finest string quartet. Written in 1826, when he was completely deaf, this quartet begins with an ethereal fugue, and its seven movements are performed without pause. Themes from earlier movements are freely quoted and developed in later movements, giving the listener the sense of an integrated, organic, whole. When Franz Schubert heard this piece for the first time, he said, "After this, what is left for us to write?" Please join us before the concert, at 2:15, for a "pre-ception", light refreshments and a conversation about the day's program with cellist and ACS president James Holland
