BRIEF SYNOPSIS:

Springs are useful, ubiquitous, inauspicious, and often-overlooked devices that enable the functionality of nearly all mechanical devices.  Springs remain a challenging and evolving field, particularly in the oil and gas industry.  Springs are found in most critical tools, including drilling tools, subsea actuators, subsurface safety valves, gas turbines, and relief valves.  The nature of these tools mandates corrosion resistant alloys capable of operating at elevated temperatures, while exceeding minimum lifespan requirements.  Actuator springs can stand as tall as a man, weigh as much as a car, and exert enough force to lift an airliner.  Springs demand cutting-edge metallurgy and manufacturing techniques, including increased use of composites, shape-memory alloys, and additive manufacturing.

SPEAKER'S BIOGRAPHY:

Thomas Williams serves as the Senior Project Engineer at Suhm Spring Works, a leading supplier of springs and metal forms for the oil and gas and nuclear industries. His responsibilities include designing custom components for oil and gas equipment, performing finite element analysis, incorporating advanced inspection equipment in manufacturing, and modeling the physics of quenching steel. Prior to Suhm, Thomas was a research and development engineer at Baker Hughes focusing on mechanical design and distributed-fiber optic sensing. His background also includes working at the Texas A&M Flight Research Laboratory and NASAs Armstrong Flight Research Center performing flight research and studying fundamental fluid dynamics. Thomas earned an MS in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M University and a BS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Tennessee.

Professional Development Hour (PDH) certificates will be available to participants at the conclusion of the event.
