Workshop description:
When an organization or gallery posts a call for submissions, hundreds  sometimes thousands  of artists apply. So, how do you stand out? In this workshop, artist and Spokane Arts Fund Program Manager Ellen Picken will cover the basics of the call for submission process. Youll learn where to look for calls; how to submit applications through online platforms, such as CaFÉ and Submittable; what materials youll need, like artist statements and letters of recommendation; what makes for a strong work sample; and how to keep up the momentum by building good relationships with funders and gallerists.

Topics Covered:

1) Research. Where to look for calls.
2) The Right Fit. Should I apply to this call?
3) Read the Directions. Paying attention to the details.
4) Materials. Written (Artist statements to letters of recommendation) and Visual (What makes an image stand out?)
5) Consequences. What if you are chosen?!
6) Contact. How to help keep up the momentum by building good relationships.

Instructor: Ellen Picken

Ellen Picken is the Program Manager at Spokane Arts Fund. As an arts administrator she reviews hundreds of submissions and proposals from all over the region. As a practicing artist, she understands the submission process from the artists point of view too.  Her awards include two Artists Trust GAP grants, a Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center, and an international call for a mural project in Seattle.  She holds two bachelors degrees from Eastern Washington University, Fine Arts, and Visual Communication in Design.  She and her partner are co-conspirators in their photographic-design company Factory.Town.
