BTP Fall Festival Show # 2
"The Life and Times of Harriet Tubman" written and performed by Dr. Daisy Century
This play captures the life of Harriet Tubman from the time she was a little girl to her trips on the Underground Railroad. The performance speaks to a side of Harriet Tubman that most people have not heard. It captures her intelligence, precociousness, observational skills and her uncompromising disposition. Understanding her childhood lays the scene for running to freedom. She wasn't born to be a slave and she didn't stay one neither.

"A Mind Worth Exploring" written and performed by Amadea Martino Smith
This is the story of one young woman - Cassia - who suffers from mental illness. We follow her through time, as her experiences reveal not only the highs and lows of mental illness, but how sufferers were treated by society. From Ancient Mesopotamia to present times, Cassia encounters ignorance, intolerance, cruel and experimental treatment, and the deep roots of stigma. History has shown that society's perception of mental illness has influenced medical treatment. The history of mental illness has been a sad one. Thankfully, the 21st century has ushered in advances in brain research as well as empathy and compassion as we now understand that those who suffer are not to blame. We must continue exploring the mind, and uncover the causes and cures of mental illness in order to improve treatment and save lives.

"Alma Rose" by Polly Edelstein and Austin Stanton
This piece is based on the story of Alma Rose, the woman who led the orchestra at Auschwitz and was a concert violinist across Europe. Featured in Arthur Millers Playing for Time, Alma Roses story is a fascinating one of perseverance even in the hardest of times. By exploring her life from a variety of different angles we hope to tell her story in a new and fresh way and honor the memory of an incredible woman.
