This talk examines works of architecture associated with Houstons Jewish community to pose the question: how have these buildings and sites contributed to Houstons emergence as a major U.S. city?

The presentation will identify buildings designed by prominent architects who were Jewish, as well as those constructed by developers who were Jewish, to assess the impact these places have exerted on the evolution of Houstons identity in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

In the decades after World War II, both here in Houston and around the country, millions of American Jews put down new roots in suburban communities, leaving behind the urban ethnic enclaves of earlier generations for greener pastures. How did suburbanization reshape American Jewish life, and how and why did Meyerland and its surrounding neighborhoods in southwest Houston become the new center of our Jewish community in the 1960s? Through photographs, letters, advertisements, and personal reflections, this lecture will explore a transformational era in Houston Jewish history.
