Peter Case and Mike Mangione
If this record doesnt sell a million copies, I quit the business, said producer T Bone Burnett while listening to a playback of Peter Case, the classic self-titled solo debut by The Nerves co-founder and leader of The Plimsouls, now in expanded 30th anniversary reissue edition with bonus tracks and available from Omnivore Recordings on September 16, 2016.
Helmed by J. Henry (T Bone) Burnett and Mitchell Froom, Peter Case includes 11 originals and a cover of the Pogues Pair Of Brown Eyesrecorded before their version was released, thanks to a tip from Elvis Costelloand features an all-star cast of guests from Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), Roger McGuinn (The Byrds) and Rusty Anderson (Paul McCartney), to backing vocals by John Hiatt and Victoria Williams, string arrangement by the incomparable Van Dyke Parks and contributions by session giants Jim Keltner (drums), Jerry Moratta (drums), and Jerry Scheff (Elvis Presleys bassist).
The disc earned Case his first Grammy nomination for the song Old Blue Car and topped The New York Times list of best albums of the year, with NYT contributor Robert Palmer stating, Peter Case is the sort of album that is going to be remembered and treasured for years to come. An auspicious start and essential chapter in Cases 13-album-catalog, Peter Case is not only revered by everyone whos ever heard it, its sound and feel spearheaded the songwriter movement now known as Americana.
The 30th-anniversary edition of Peter Case includes the re-mastered original 12-track album, and seven bonus tracks: two from a 1986 promotional EP and five previously unissued recordings. The package includes a new essay from Case about the album and unseen photos from the time period. Whether you were introduced to Case on last years Omnivore recording, HWY 62, joined him along the road from here to there, or have been with him all along, the expanded edition of Peter Case will take you back to the where it all began.
I still sing these songs whenever I perform on the road. People are always telling me about the impact the record had on them, and thirty years later Im still proud of every cut, says Case.
When Mike Mangione approached producer Bo Ramsey, he mentioned that he and his 5-piece band, The Union, spent 2 weeks making "Offering," the follow-up to their lush and much lauded debut album, "Tenebrae." What the hell did you do for two weeks! asked Ramsey, adding Greg Browns album was cut in 3 days. Mangione and band rose to the challenge, finishing their newest record in only 2 days. A listen to the first cut from "Red-Winged Blackbird Man," its hard to believe a record so seemingly complex was laid down so quickly. Out September 3, 2013, it is the fourth for Mangione and third with The Union, an orchestral folk-rock outfit with a variety of strings, electric guitars and drums. The songs fit under the wide genre of Americana in general, and pull from the traditions of contemporary folk, singer-songwriter, early country, and blues in particular.
Bos brilliance is in his ability to get tone and vibe right away. It came so naturally and allowed us to enter into the performance at the first press of record, said Mangione.
"Time Out Chicago" has aptly described Mike Mangione & The Union as, a more atmospheric take on folk-rock. Their first album, "Tenebrae" (2008), was warmly received in the press. "All Music Guide" selected their work as an Album Pick," "New York Magazine" spotlighted the band, while "Blurt Magazine" referred to the tear-stained folk, Memphis-styled gospel and bluesy-flavored pop as luminous. In 2010 they released "Offering" on their own imprint, RODZINKA Records, with sync and digital licensing by DUALTONE Records. They average 100+ dates yearly and have toured as far as Asia, Europe, and Canada.
Mangione started solo, with electric guitar accompaniment from brother Tom before starting a search to develop the band, adding in time: John Collins on upright and electric bass, Patrick Hoctor on cello and vocals, Kristina Priceman on violin and vocals, and Nez on drums and percussion.
