Ninth Annual Shake the Hand that Feeds You Dinner
The Shake The Hand That Feeds You Dinner has been one of the most highly anticipated events for food lovers around Ohio for years. This joyful evening of celebrating food tradition never fails to amaze. Dinner guests gather together with a spirit of conviviality to celebrate food diversity and experience the reality of good, clean and fair food.
This year's dinner on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6 pm, will be different from the rest. In the past, we have brought diners to an area farm to better feel the direct connection with our food. The upcoming Shake the Hand That Feeds You will be hosted at a local food hub at the Columbus Produce Terminal -- the distribution center for Great River Organics, also known as GRO. It's a farmer-owned cooperative comprising growers committed to expanding the footprint of local, certified organic products in the Ohio marketplace.
In addition to drawing from multiple farmers who will provide fresh, great-tasting, responsibly and organically grown produce, we will also draw upon the talents of multiple chefs. As the season progresses and the event draws near, we will update this post with more menu details. Please note the dinner is vegetarian friendly (please contact markanthony@slowfoodcolumbus.org to let us know in advance if you are vegetarian) with plenty of options for carnivores, too.
What you can expect so far: a signature cocktail in hand prepared by mixologist Nicolene Schwartz as you dine on pizza appetizers oven-roasted live by Jim Budros and take a walk through (and contribute to) our silent auction items. Then gear up for a late summer salad by Cara Mangini of Little Eater, breads by Dan the Baker, rustic-elegant dishes from Gallerie chef Bill Glover, Chilean-inspired fare from author Isidora Diaz, and enriched by spices from Ben Walters of North Market Spices, plus a dessert to include bicycle-churned Snowville ice cream.
We hope you can join us in this experience which truly demonstrates what it means to go from farm to hub to table.
Funds raised from this year's dinner will go toward supporting our strong school garden programs, as well as central Ohio's Terra Madre delegate Alexis Joseph of Alchemy Juice Bar + Cafe. A registered dietitian and self-proclaimed hummus enthusiast, she will join others from around the world in Turin, Italy at Slow Food's annual conference in late September.
***Please note: Official ticket sales end at 4pm today (Thursday, September 8th). If you find we have run out of available tickets but would like to be placed on a waiting list, please contact markanthony@slowfoodcolumbus.org. Again, if you are vegetarian, please contact us, as well, so we can get as accurate a head count as possible!***
