Spend the morning here for a dive into how social practice and place-based art intersect, with artists, thinkers, and scientists. Well start the day with breakfast in the forest, then dive this topic. Well visit Marion Wilsons Bryophilia and MLAB, a mobile art and botany field station; hike to explore how mosses evolve uniquely to their local environments; and join in an interdisciplinary panel.
Panelists include art and science thinkers and practitioners, including Marion Wilson (artist, Syracuse), Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer (bryologist, SUNY-ESF), Jane Harris (art writer, Brooklyn), and Patricia Phillips (curator, Moore; moderator). Dr. Kimmerer will share how she blends botanical, scientific knowledge with her indigenous heritage, promoting discussion of diverse ways of knowing, and the panel will explore questions both large and small as we imagine new ways to engage art and social practice.
In partnership with the In/Out summer symposium organized by Moore College of Art & Designs Social & Studio Practices and the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program.
Shuttles will be provided by Moore College of Art & Design for attendees coming from Center City.
Schedule

11 am: Welcome and panel discussion
12:15: Walk with Keith Bowman to see the Schuylkill Center forests, with a special focus on bryophytes
1 pm: Concluding thoughts and departure
