Vaughan Williams and Britten | New Mexico Symphonic Chorus
Roger Melone, conductor Vaughan Williams, Mass in G minor for soloists and double chorus Britten, Hymn to St. Cecilia Britten, Festival Te Deum for chorus and organ Hail Britannia! Sung at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey, the Mass in G minor is technically difficult, but harmonically astounding. Vaughan Williams studied with Maurice Ravel in Paris, and dedicated this work to his close friend, Gustav Holst. Benjamin Britten sets W.H. Audens poem to a wondrous English medieval carol in Hymn to St. Cecilia. His imaginative Festival Te Deum op. 32 has the freedom of Gregorian chant, but passion and energetic rhythm from the organ.
