Seattle Herbal Apprenticeship, Part 1
Have you ever wanted to see the medicine in the trees around you? Ever wondered after the various clinical applications of the weeds in your lawn? This class will answer those quandaries and more. Herbalism is an ancient art, which has recently seen a revival in the western world. The thing I find most empowering about using herbal medicine, is that it is mostly free, accessible and low-risk. It offers another option for those frustrated with the modern medical system. This course is designed to prepare you to harvest, prepare and use herbal remedies at home for you and your family. This is the first part of a three part apprenticeship. This class will include one weekend a month for three months. Each weekend we will spend a day in the field (local Seattle parks and forests), and a day in the classroom (located in central or south Seattle). Topics discussed during part 1 are at an introductory level, and will be expanded upon in parts 2-3 of the apprenticeship. TOPICS OF STUDY: - Identification and harvest of local and seasonally appropriate medicinal plants. We will look at mainly berries and roots. - Some Major plant families and their characteristics. - Major Western medicinal herbs - Making and using tinctures and teas internally. - External applications of herbs. - Basic home remedies. - Herbal Actions (What does diaphoretic mean? Diuretic?) - Introduction to body / organ systems as seen from an herbalist's perspective - Introduction to Tissue states (Hot/ Cold, Damp/ Dry) There will be one or two work exchange with partial tuition opportunities. Inquire for more information.
