Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, a concert film by D.A. Pennebaker plus short film concert of Alice Cooper
Two great 1970s concert films by the filmmaker who single-handedly created the rock concert film format!

Capturing 16 numbers from the 1973 Aladdin Sane UK "farewell" tour, rock doc vet Pennebaker shoots straight with minimal behind-the-scenes action, and he only has eyes for Bowie (and guitarist Mick Ronson) in ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS(1 hour 31 minutes).

David Bowies final electrifying performance as Ziggy Stardust in 1973 at Londons Hammersmith Odeon Theater. The feature length film captures the aura surrounding one of the most unusual stars of the contemporary music scene.

Framed by a smattering of behind-the-scenes footage, the bulk of the film concerns the actual concert, notable as the final time that Bowie would perform under the Ziggy Stardust persona, an announcement that, at the time, led many fans to mistakenly believe Bowie was retiring altogether.

Featuring numerous songs like Ziggy Stardust, Moonage Daydream, Changes, and Space Oddity from the albums Ziggy Stardust, Hunky Dory, Aladdin Sane and other Bowie albums, as well as a cover of the Velvet Undergrounds White Light/White Heat. Though a shortened version of the film was broadcast on television in 1974, the film did not receive a full theatrical release until 1983.

PLUS short concert film ALICE COOPER(1970) (30 minutes)

Alice Cooper and bands first performance, organized by his friend Frank Zappa, at the Toronto Rock and Roll Revival in 1969.

We played the Toronto Peace Festival with John Lennon, Yoko Ono and The Doors. While we were on, somebody from the audience threw a chicken on stage. Im from Detroit, Im not a farm kid. I figured a chicken had wings, itll fly away. So I took the chicken and threw it and it didnt fly. It went into the audience. Blood everywhere. The next day, everybodys reading, Alice Cooper rips chickens head off, drinks blood. Zappa called me. He said, Whatever you did, keep doing it. To this day, wherever Im booked the ASPCA is usually there, too.
