Modern Sacred Spaces: Plymouth Congregational Church

Modern Sacred Spaces is Docomomo WEWA's event series showcasing religious structures built by different faith communities in the mid-20th century. The buildings represent innovative efforts by postwar architects and engineers to create spiritual places of light and form using new materials and construction techniques.

Our second event in the series takes place at Plymouth Congregational Church in downtown Seattle.

Designed by NBBJ and built in 1967-1968, the churchs modest white exterior anchors an important corner of Modern architecture in downtown. Many interior spaces provide amazing views to its Modern neighbors--the IBM building and Rainier Tower. However, the main sanctuary and smaller chapel are voluminous insular gems separated from the hectic urban activity surrounding it.

Time: 5:00 - 6:45 pm. At 5:30 pm, Jennifer Hing of LMN Architects and Steve Stroming of RAFN Construction will describe the recent upgrades.

Enter through the main entrance on 6th Avenue near University Street. Free parking is available in the underground garage after 4 pm until 6:45 pm. Both the garage and church building close at 7 pm.

Members of the congregation will be present to speak about the experience of celebrating inside this modern space.

Cost: Tickets are $10 if purchased online through Brown Paper Tickets; $15 at the door the day of the event. Student price is $5 online or at the door.
Event fees go towards future programs.
