The Elements
Common Tone Arts Presents:
The Universal Language Project 2016 Season

The Elements....AND an afterparty to celebrate our second season of ULP shows!

An event with visual artist Scott Kolbo and the iconoclast band TORCH.  The four classical elements of earth, fire, wind, and water will be depicted through music and brought to life with moving canvas imagery. We will engage the audience in our depiction of a fifth element, Aether.

The Universal Language Project is dedicated to creating artisan music through innovative and entertaining programming that can simultaneously push boundaries and dialogue with a mainstream public. Through multi-discipline collaboration and engaging musicians and composers from diverse backgrounds and eclectic genres, the Universal Language Project aspires to generate a body of music that can reach across generational divides, through geographic borders, and beyond spoken language and cultural difference.

TORCH
Poised between progressive jazz, post-rock, and contemporary classical music, the quartet's original compositions are a playful juxtaposition amidst our heady intellects and our groove craving souls.
Torch is a reference to Tomas Mann where he proclaimed the aesthetic mantra, "Art is the sacred torch that must shed its merciful light into all life's terrible depths."

SCOTT KOLBO is a visual artist and a professor at Seattle Pacific University.
We are a funny species. My work is first and foremost about humor, the comedy and tragedy I see in the world around me, and most importantly in myself. I create prints, drawings, installations, performances and projections where fragments of reality mix with exaggerated environments and grotesque characters. I believe that despite our best efforts to look important, rational, and dignified, we all make fools of ourselves in the end. I like to think of my work as an investigation into the ways that this tendency manifests itself in our individual lives and in society as a whole. I'm a big believer in the notion that we learn something important when we laugh at ourselves, and that we should be fearless when we evaluate the society we are all complicit in creating for each other.
