Gordon Adam and Manjudeva
Embracing Interconnectedness through the Body:  A Focusing-based Interactive Day Retreat with Gordon Adam & Manjudeva

When we inhale, the air comes into the inner world. When we exhale, the air goes out to the outer world. The inner world is limitless, and the outer world is also limitless. We say inner world or outer world but actually there is just one world. Shunryu Suzuki

In this day retreat we will draw upon Focusing, and the felt sense, to lead us to a greater, more holistic, more truthful knowing about life and our place in it. The body already knows in a direct and unmediated way how interconnected we are to the rest of existence  we just need to learn to stop and listen...

Eugene Gendlin developed Focusing in the early 70s and coined the term felt sense to describe the totality of an individuals experience of any situation. In Gendlins philosophy we experience existence with our whole body, however much of this experience goes unrecognised because of our conditioned bias towards cognitive experience  i.e. thoughts and concepts.

In his book Focusing, Gendlin describes the felt sense as a sense of being bodily alive in a vast system, and in truth we do depend on a vast complex socio-eco-spiritual system for our existence. By Gendlins definition, our bodily felt sense contains much information about the external conditions in which we live, as well as more personal information.

This retreat is suitable for those who are already familiar with meditation practice and will include some active listening in pairs, as well as periods of movement, and sitting and walking meditation.

Manjudeva and Gordon Adam have both been actively involved in Buddhist practice within different traditions for many years. They are both also experienced Focusing teachers and have individually led many retreats combining Buddhist meditation and Focusing. This will be their second co-led day retreat for Bristol Insight Meditation.
