Building Social Courage
If you care about the environment, you care about communication. And communication, with diverse stakeholders on issues of public health and community well-being, can be challenging!
One of the most limiting factors in environmental advocacy is the fear of conflict. What do we say when people disagree with us in unpleasant ways? How do we respond to hostile remarks and tactics in public hearings? Many of us avoid political engagement because we are not sure that we will respond in ways that express our best selves.
Ilene Wolf, M.F.T., offers five essential communication tools that you can use to parry conflict with compassion, consideration, and strength. These tools are based on the work of Nonviolent Communication founder Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D. and Stanford researcher David Burns, M.D. (Cognitive Behavior Therapy).
In this workshop, you will learn skills that you can use at home and at work to transform conflicts into opportunities for greater understanding and cooperation. This process can be mastered by anyone who is dedicated to finding more confidence when faced with anger. The approach can help each of us find a natural ease in our most difficult and challenging relationships whether as teachers, advocates, or community leaders -- ultimately being successful in ways that we previously thought impossible.
This workshop is a special retreat of the Marin chapter of Green Sangha, and opens with gentle yoga and meditation. led by Stuart Moody, director.
