Steve and Jubal Young in concert
American Troubadours Steve and Jubal Young in Concert
Steve Young performs with his son Jubal at Arena Theater on Saturday, June 23. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m., tickets are $20.
Often labeled as a country singer, Steve Young has never fit comfortably into categories. He follows his own musical and spiritual quest, weaving together Southern roots with a wide experience of life, and creating new traditions in American music.
"With his no-holds-barred baritone and lightning-fast, finger-style guitar, Steve transports his audience into the musical soul of America. His contemporary edge dances with the time-honored traditions of American music. With a vibrant repertoire that draws from Roots, Folk, Appalachian, Blues, Americana, Southern Gospel, Celtic and Tejano, Steve is living proof of the force of true roots music." (Sedona.biz)
Young became an integral part of the outlaw movement which defined the California country-rock sound. Appearing on Young's 1969 classic album, Rock, Salt & Nails were fellow pioneers like Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, Bernie Leadon and Gram Parsons.
Many of the stars of the music industry have recorded Steve Young songs, and in some cases forged a career image around them. "Lonesome, Orn'ry & Mean," for example, became the signature tune for 'Outlaw' Waylon Jennings. Hank Williams Jr.'s cover of "Montgomery In The Rain" remains a classic.
Young's best-known composition is "Seven Bridges Road" (on Rock Salt & Nails & Seven Bridges Road) which became a major hit for The Eagles when they included a cover of it on their live album in 1980.
Steve's most recent CD, Stories Round Horseshoe Bend (Yesterday & Today, AU), is a live recording featuring 17 songs and 12 introductions. It is Young's 14th solo recording. "Stories" follows a long list of critically acclaimed recordings. In fact, Billboard named Primal Young CD as a "Critic's Choice" and called Young a "singer of major status." And Rolling Stone Record Guide awarded 4 stars to Renegade Picker and No Place to Fall. Plus Nashville Scene selected Renegade Picker as one of "The 50 Best Albums Ever," alongside recordings by Hank Williams, Neil Young and The Stanley Brothers, clear evidence of Young's musical status. "All my CDs can be quite different in a way from each other, except the voice makes the connection," Young says.
The Arena Theater bar and snack stand will be open.
