Beat Masters - Amir Ziv - Cyro Baptista - Billy Martin

BEAT MASTERS
"Three of NYC's most eccentric and influential groove icons come together to demonstrate that 1+1+1 is greater than 3. WAY greater. The Ziv/Martin/Baptista trio will be setting out to prove that innovative compositional & sonic ideas X unpredictable tempo and energy = exponential illumination! Live music is the new math."

AMIR ZIV
Amir is a critically acclaimed artist who has helped shape the downtown NYC music scene for the past 18 years. He is the co-founder of Sound Chemistry Records, and DROID (w/Adam Holzman, Jordan McLean, Tim LeFebvre, Yossi Fine)  as well as the founder of KOTKOT (w/Marc Ribot, Cyro Baptista, and Shahzad Ismaily), and of the Living Arts Apprenticeship Program (LAAP); a cross-disciplinary live-on-the-land arts intensive that discovers and inspires new talent and curates future recording projects. He has presented master classes around the world and his students have gone on to work with some of music's most established luminaries, including Wynton Marsalis, Vernon Reid, Roy Haynes, Bilal Oliver, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Cassandra Wilson, and Christian McBride. Amir is Principle Drum/Percussion Faculty Member and Head of Drum Core-Curriculum & Advising at the New School's Jazz & Contemporary Music Program. As a sideman, Ziv has performed and/or recorded with John Zorn, Medeski Martin and Wood, Ornette Coleman, Sean Lennon, David Broza, Lauryn Hill, Carl Craig, DJ Spooky, Wayne Krantz, DJ Logic, Cibo Mato, Trey Anastasio, Pizzicato Five, etc, - at venues across the globe such as Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Carre Theater  Amsterdam, Festival d'Agadir  Morocco and the Bonnaroo Festival.

BILLY MARTIN
Above all else, Billy Martin believes in the power of unguarded expression to capture glimpses of the truth  sometimes only fleetingly, sometimes for extended, intoxicating stretches. He pursues the ecstatic and the insightful from a variety of vantage points: as a drummer and percussionist, as a composer, as a filmmaker, sculptor, visual artist, and even as a carpenter. To varying degrees, each endeavor is marked by Martin's dearly held belief that unfettered improvisation and an honest commitment to the moment at hand can bring about new levels of understanding, new perspectives, new sonic textures, and a more profound emotional impact. "In any circumstance, any medium," he reflects, "you need to be sincere with yourself and with your audience. This is who you are, and you've got to be trying as hard as you can to create something for the situation that's new and fresh. There are going to be some mistakes, it may not be perfect, but you've got to be willing to take that chance at any given moment."

CYRO BAPTISTA
Since arriving in the U.S. in 1980 from his native country Brazil, Cyro Baptista has emerged as one of the premier percussionists in the country. Coinciding with the rise in the public's interest of world music, Cyro has managed to record and tour with some of music's most popular names. His mastery of Brazilian percussion and the many instruments he creates himself, have catapulted him into world renown. With his own project, the percussion and dance ensemble known as 'Beat the Donkey' Cyro gives free reign to his imagination, mixing his tremendous musical skills, his natural humor and theatrical ways with instruments from Brazil, Middle East, Indonesia, Africa and US. Cyro's credits read like a "Who's Who" of modern music. He toured extensively with Yo-Yo Ma's Brazil Project, Trey Anastasio's Band (of Phish), John Zorn's Electric Masada, Herbie Hancock's Grammy award winning "Gershwin's World", Sting and Paul Simon's "Rhythm of the Saints".
