Mayo Street Arts Fringe Fest
Portland Fringe Fest at Mayo Street Arts June 28-30
As part of the new Portland Performing Arts Festival, Mayo Street Arts will host three days of fabulous Fringe events. Audiences can check out puppetry, music, and theater by the likes of Figures of Speech Theatre, Libby Marcus, A Company of Girls, Reuben J. Little, Peaks Island Puppets, and MotionFolk Theater. Libby Marcus presents Come and Go by Samuel Beckett adapted to marionettes. Puppeteers Libby Marcus and Davis Robinson. Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc., New York City.
Marcus's marionettes Flo, Vi, and Ru reminisce "in the old way", in this short play considered to be one of Beckett's most "perfect" plays: Varying between 121 and 127 words in length, depending on the translation, Beckett agonized over each individual line until they exactly matched his creative vision, and as such is rarely performed on its own.

A dark waterfront night enacted with a marionette fisherman, wharf, and wooden boat...new music & marionettes by local artist, craftsman, and puppeteer Reuben J Little.
Peaks Island Puppets open with Solomon and Ashmedai, or How the wise King Solomon wasn't always very wise.

Ian Bannon of Figures of Speech Theater presents Jester Kings of Java Wayang Kulit (Indonesian Shadow) Puppetry.
Gorgeous hand-crafted puppets made from gilded water buffalo hide portray the heroes, villains, and lovers from the ancient Ramayana, who dance across the eight-foot-wide shadow screen to the mesmerizing sound of Indonesian Gamelan music.

A Company of Girls presents a staged-reading performance of Lord of the Flies.
Based on the novel by William Golding, this original adaption by Joan Sand was designed for female performers and youth audiences. As part of ACOG's programming, Lord of the Flies is being utilized as a tool to examine the negative effects of bullying on communities, and by exploring these concepts will help steer girls towards acceptance and diversity.
