El Camino de Santiago

Central City Chorus, directed by Phillip Cheah, continues its 35th season with El Camino de Santiago, a program of Spanish medieval plainchant and Renaissance polyphony which would have been sung or heard on the ancient pilgrimage route to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia (northwestern Spain. The concert will be held at St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church on West 87th Street between Broadway and West End Avenue in Manhattan on Saturday, March 12th at 7:00 p.m.

As part of the Chorus ongoing celebration of the theme for its 35th anniversary, Journeys and Tapestries, the music of this concert takes its inspiration from an actual journey, that of the physical route undertaken by pilgrims (from medieval times up to the present day itself) as their path towards spiritual growth and reflection. Some of the music heard at this concert would have been sung by the pilgrims themselves while others would have been experienced in the abbeys and great cathedrals of Spain and France. Music featured on this concert include chants from the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat and the Codex Calixtinus as well as motets and other polyphonic music by Tomás Luis de Victoria, Alonso Lobo, Cristóbal de Morales, and Francisco Guerrero.
