Labor History + WORK/DEATH, at Slater Mill
A people's histor tour of Slater Mill, followed by a site specific performance from Work/Death inside the oldest textile mill in the country.
LABOR HISTORY, 1793-1824
The program will begin with a special people's history tour of the factory from Slater Mill interpreter and labor advocate Joey L DeFrancesco. The tour will explore the connections between slavery and early capitalism, the dismal conditions for the first child workers, and the growing anger and solidarity that led to our countrys first factory strike in 1824 right here in Pawtucket.
WORK/DEATH
Following the tour will be a performance from Providence musician Work/Death, aka Scott Reber. Scott grew up in Woonsocket, RI and worked in one of the state's textile mills. He will perform the composition The Great Textile Strike of 1934 to be played inside of the factory utilizing the sounds of the machines.
