"Robert Bly, as few other poets have done, has changed the world for all who   now share it."  Jane Hirshfield

The life of American poet Robert Bly, author, activist, and leader of the mythopoetic men's movement, is brilliantly, exuberantly revealed in the new feature length film by Haydn Reiss, "A Thousand Years of Joy."

Robert Bly is distinctly an American original  a poet, translator, mythologist, social activist and cultural troublemaker for over half a century.  While Reiss has known Bly for over twenty years, the poet remained largely a mystery to him.  How did this Minnesota farm boy travel so far and create such an abundance of remarkable work?

A heroic effort to deeply understand Bly, the film finds in him not only the great tradition that begins with Whitman and Thoreau, but also a purely contemporary sort of intelligence. Arguably the leading champion of poetry of the last half-century, Bly's boundless curiosity and belief that poetry matters in the life of a nation has often put him on the front lines of cultural and political debate. The bestselling author of Iron John and Sibling Society, and winner of numerous awards (including the National Book Award) for his own poetry, Bly also introduced the work of Rumi, Hafez, Kabir, Mirabai, Neruda, Lorca, Basho, Transtromer and others to English readers.

"One of the leaders of a poetic revival that has returned American literature to the world community." Kenneth Rexroth

"Bly's poems flow from...the great current of longing for reality, for true maturity, the devotee's call to the Beloved."  The Nation

"A Thousand Years of Joy" features John Densmore, Louise Erdrich, Donald Hall, Edward Hirsch, Jane Hirshfield, Philip Levine, Michael Meade, Martin Sheen, Gary Snyder, Gioia Timpanelli and others.

Haydn Reiss has made a unique series of video documentaries on poets, including William Stafford & Robert Bly: A Literary Friendship, Every War Has Two Losers (based on the journals of poet William Stafford), and the award-winning Rumi: Poet of the Heart (an official selection of the 2011 United National Film Festival. Earlier he worked as the director's assistant on the psychological thriller Jacob's Ladder and on Oliver Stone's JFK, and then on "Peace Is Every Step: Mediation in Action: The Life and Work of Thich Nhat Hanh.
