BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2016 FILM SERIES

Fri, Feb. 26 @ 6:30PM (FREE SCREENING)

Sons of Benkos
"Sons of Benkos" shows the evolution of Afro-Colombian music over generations while exploring the presence of African culture in Colombia. The title pays homage to Benkos, an important Black leader in the fight for freedom during the era of slavery in Colombia. The title "Sons of Benkos" suggests the ongoing struggle for the recognition of African influences in Colombia's artistic heritage.

(Dir. Lucas Silva, 52 min, 2003, Columbia/France, Documentary, Spanish with English subtitles)

Josephine Baker: Black Diva in a White Man's World
"Josephine Baker: Black Diva in a White Man's World  is a tender, revealing documentary about one of the most famous and popular performing artists of the twentieth century.

While known for her legendary banana belt dance and her classic song "J'ai deux amours," Josephine Baker was also a worker for the French Resistance, an ambulance driver during WWII, and an outspoken activist against racial discrimination in the worldwide Black Consciousness movement of the 20th century. This revealing documentary portrays the artist outside the lens of European colonial clichés.

(Dir. Annette von Wangenheim, 45 mins, 2006, Germany, Documentary, French/German with English subtitles)
