Murder Most Foul in SLO -- Joe Carotenuti

Crime in California was rampant in the Mission Period (roughly the 1850's), with no organized or effective way to combat it. Society's response began with the barbarous justice meted out by the Vigilance Committee and evolved to increasingly sophisticated solutions to ensure public safety, including efforts to organize a police force and a court system.

Our instructor, Joe Carotenuti, will trace this fascinating aspect of California's history with emphasis on the development of the justice system on the Central Coast.

Joe will also describe some of the most famous and disturbing homicides in San Luis Obispo County: the Reed murders in San Miguel during the Mission Period by unsuccessful gold miners turned marauders; the murder of Ah Louis' wife in 1909; and the murder of Helen King at the Andrews Hotel in San Luis Obispo in 1947.

Joe Carotenuti is the City Historian/Archivist for the City of San Luis Obispo. He is a regular contributor to Journal Plus magazine and has written over 125 articles on local history.
