About May Project Gardens

May Project Gardens is situated in the suburbs of Morden in South London. The Project was founded in 2009 with the aim of bringing communities closer together through ecological and ethical activities. The site has approximately 250sqm of growing space where a variety of fruits and vegetables are grown by individuals who volunteer their time to help keep the project going. The site was designed using Permaculture principles, advocating working with nature not against her to fulfil our needs, and great  emphasis is placed on reducing waste and increasing efficiency. We have a medium sized polytunnel, a small herb garden, two large main crop beds, a wildlife zone (which includes a pond and a wild flower bed), a small food forest garden and four different composting systems.

The main aim of May Project Gardens is to bring communities closer together to act collectively. The project provides access to the tools necessary to educate communities about the issues that affect the environment and as a result the effects they have on those inhabiting the planet. May Project Gardens helps to demonstrate some of the solutions to these issues and encourages all to get involve and make a difference. We hold regular open days where anyone can come along and get involve either helping out in the garden, sowing seed, weeding, harvesting, etc. or help make some of the many produce we create at the garden namely jams, chutneys, and juices. We also deliver workshops and courses on a range of topics including Permaculture, composting, using recycled wood, wild food foraging, and fruit and vegetable growing.

More about these mushrooms

Oyster Mushroom
Oyster mushrooms have been revered for thousands of years as both a food and a medicine. Oyster mushrooms are rich in protein, vitamin C, niacin, folic acid and potassium. Oyster mushrooms contain most of the mineral salts required by the human body. Their niacin content is about ten times higher than any other vegetables and the folic acid in oyster mushrooms helps to cure anemia. Oyster mushrooms are suitable for people with high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes due to their low sodium/potassium ratio, starch, fat and calorific value. Oysters naturally produce compounds called statins. Statin drugs reduce "bad cholesterol" (LDL) by stimulating receptors in the liver to clear the cholesterol from the body. Studies have shown a link between consuming the Oyster variety and a lowering of cholesterol levels, no doubt due to the statins they produce. As for cancer, research shows a possible anti-tumor effect from polysaccharides in oysters. A polysaccharide is a complex carbohydrate made up of smaller sugar molecules. Specific polysaccharides, known as beta-D-glucans, are suspected to stimulate the immune system to fight cancer.

Reshi Mushroom
Hailed in ancient Eastern medicine as the "mushroom of immortality" and the "medicine of kings." This prized fungus may be able to boost your immune system, fight cancer, ward off heart disease, calm your nerves and relieve both allergies and inflammation. An immunostimulant, it is helpful for people with AIDS, leaky-gut syndrome, Epstein-Barr, chronic bronchitis and other infectious diseases. It is used as an aid to sleep, as a diuretic, as a laxative and to lower cholesterol. Research shows that the polysaccharide beta-1,3-D-glucan in reishi boosts the immune system by raising the amount of macrophages T-cells, which has major implications for people suffering from AIDS and other immune system disorders. This immune-boosting action also works wonders in the prevention and treatment of cancer, as the T-cells are then able to fight cancer cells more effectively. However, reishi may help the body defeat cancer in not just one, but four ways. As a result of these amazing anti-cancer abilities, laboratory research and traditional medicinal usage of reishi to fight cancer is so positive that the Japanese government officially recognizes it as a cancer treatment.

Shiitake Mushroom
A symbol of longevity in Asia because of their health-promoting properties, Shiitake mushrooms have been used medicinally by the Chinese for more than 6,000 years. Recent studies have traced shiitakes' legendary benefits to an active compound contained in these mushrooms called lentinan. Among lentinan's healing benefits is its ability to power up the immune system, strengthening its ability to fight infection and disease. Against influenza and other viruses, lentinan has been shown to be even more effective than prescription drugs; it even improves the immune status of individuals infected with HIV. L-ergothioneine, a powerful antioxidant, has been discovered in mushrooms, thanks to a new analytical method capable of identifying this antioxidant in plant material. In research presented in 2005 an American research team revealed that mushrooms contain higher concentrations L-ergothioneine than either of the two dietary sources previously believed to contain the most: chicken liver and wheat germ. Testing mushrooms consumed in the U.S., the team found that shiitake, oyster, king oyster and maitake mushrooms contain the highest amounts of L-ergothioneine.
