Music in Motion

Music in Motion!
Music, Movement Games and Yoga Basics for Ages 6-12

Participants will listen to and move with music made in different times and places, with an emphasis on the rich musical history of New Orleans. We will explore the emotional content of music and how it can be expressed through both sound and motion. Yoga movements and philosophy will foster inner focus, self-awareness and the ability to pay attention to details.

Individual and group movement activities and games will fill the hour, sandwiched between a warm up and cool down. This 13-week course will build skills including but not limited to:

-Balance
-Flexibility
-Coordination
-Teamwork
-Awareness of Meter and Tempo
-Rhythmic Sense
-Active Listing
-Impulse Control
-Awareness of Elements of Music (Form, Tempo, Dynamics, etc.)
-Instrument identification by listening
-Basic yoga postures

Students will need to wear clothing appropriate for movement such as sweatpants or leggings and bring a water bottle.

Note: For parents who may wish to accommodate younger siblings during the same block, the WeeJam Playgroup is available for 2.5-5-year-olds at the same time in the adjacent studio. About the Facilitator:
Clarinetist and Music Educator Jennie Lavine brings together a love for nurturing children's creativity and inner voice, an in-depth understanding of the human body from her graduate work in biology and teaching yoga, and musical training and performance experience ranging from opera orchestras to swing dances to folk music concerts. She uses this unique history to foster experiences through which children explore tools to express themselves -- body, heart and mind -- and share their creative endeavors with others.
