Teacher's Professional Development
Artist, Ebony Patterson's work addresses themes of race and gender through her multi-media sculpture, tapestries, and installations. While both important and timely, issues of race and gender are often difficult to discuss with our students in the classroom. As art teachers, we know that art can open doors for students to explore difficult topics in productive and meaningful ways. Using Patterson's exhibition, Dead Treez, as inspiration, teachers in this day long professional development workshop will have the opportunity to engage in discussions about race and gender so that they can, in turn, be better prepared to discuss these topics with their students. This professional development day will include an interactive workshop with  Dr. Marit Dewhurst, Director of Art Education and Assistant Professor in art and museum education at City College of New York (CUNY) and Keonna Hendrick, cultural strategist and art and museum educator. Discussions in the galleries and a hands-on art-making component will also be included.
