WHO WE ARE: The Foundation for Advancement of Haitian Midwives, Inc (FAHM) is a charitable (501(c) 3) and educational non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and aiding Haitian midwifery associations, education programs and midwifery students living in Haiti. FAHM's long term goal is to save the lives of Haitian mothers and babies by enabling access to trained midwifery care. Haiti is a Caribbean nation which spans about 10,710 square miles with a population of 19 million people: 72% living in rural areas, and over 5 million births per year. As of 2012, the United Nations estimated Haiti's maternal mortality rate at 350 deaths for every 100,000 live births, neonatal mortality at 25 deaths per 1000 births, and infant mortality at 55 deaths per 1000 births. That means a woman in Haiti is almost 20 times more likely to die in childbirth than a woman in the United States, and 3% of newborns die in their first 28 days. Midwives who are educated and regulated to international standards can provide 87% of the essential care needed for women and newborns and are considered a "best buy" in primary care health care. Investing in midwifery education with deployment to community-based services is estimated to yield a 16-fold return in terms of lives saved. FAHM evolved after making several trips around the country and observing the overwhelming need and gap in services which became greater after the horrible earthquake of 2010. It was concluded that the most sustainable model would be to aid in educating more Haitian midwives. Hence, FAHM was born! FAHM will host and sponsor its inaugural annual Midwifery conference to be held in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in March 2016. The conference is free to all midwives so no one is turned away due to inability to pay. Towards that end, we are asking your help in funding this conference.
